Standard Return Window

90 days

Most merchandise can be returned within 90 days with proof of purchase, subject to approval and exceptions. Listed products have 30-day, 7-day or exact 48-hour rules; eligible credit-account purchases can have 365 days. Condition, product and return-channel restrictions apply.

Receipt Lookup

Online purchases: card, order number or email; mobile-wallet device may be needed

When the Clock Starts

Use the applicable start date on your receipt/order for general day windows; the 365-day credit rule explicitly uses purchase, and appliances use delivery or service-desk pickup times

The Home Depot Return Policy Without a Receipt

For online purchases, store associates can look up the order with a credit card, order number or email. In-store mobile-wallet lookup may require the physical device used for payment. Non-receipted returns and store-credit purchases require valid government-issued photo ID and refund-system approval. Without valid proof, a refund may be store credit at the lowest advertised price; acceptance is not guaranteed.

Bring the item, any packaging and accessories, your payment card, and photo ID if requested. Purchase lookup is not a guarantee of return approval.

Item Exceptions

These rules can override the standard window.

The Home Depot category-specific return rules

Damage/defects must be reported within 48 hours of delivery or service-desk pickup, excluding weekends. The weekend exclusion is expressly attached to reporting; confirm how it affects the actual return cutoff. No two-calendar-day estimate is substituted.
Eligible credit-card/account purchases365 daysEligible Consumer Credit Card, Pro Xtra Credit Card (Commercial Revolving Charge) and Commercial Account purchases use 365 days from purchase. Listed 48-hour, 7-day, 30-day and other policy exceptions are excluded. This is not an extension for every item paid with a store card.
Perennials, trees, roses and shrubs1-year plant guaranteeMost plants are returnable within 90 days. Cut flowers and floral arrangements are excluded.

Consult product terms; this is not an exhaustive eligibility determination.
Special orders and Design CenterSpecial rulesWhere allowed, special-order returns/cancellations may incur 15% restocking and must go to the original store. Custom products can have nonreturnable rules. Design Center purchases can only return there; ordinary store/online purchases cannot return at the Design Center.

Online store returns exclude major appliances. Heavy/oversize pickup requires eligibility review; follow the arranged pickup/packing process.
Refund methods and shipping chargesSpecial rulesAll components are needed for a full refund; verification-system approval applies. Original shipping may be refunded for Home Depot error, subject to stated exceptions. Gift returns can receive store credit. Certain major-appliance payment types require taking the receipt to a store for refund processing.

Can You Return Opened Items?

Condition requirements vary. The listed 30-day and 7-day product groups require unused, original factory-sealed packaging; the general 90-day rule is not described as universally unopened-only. Customer-caused damage, fraud or abuse may lead to denial. Include all components for a full refund. Major appliances have their separate 48-hour rules, even when unopened or unused.

Holiday & Membership Extensions

Do not assume a holiday or membership extension applies. Dates change by season and product. Check your order’s return-by date and the retailer’s current terms before relying on extra time.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is Home Depot’s return policy?

Most merchandise can be returned within 90 days with proof of purchase, subject to approval and exceptions. Listed products have 30-day, 7-day or exact 48-hour rules; eligible credit-account purchases can have 365 days. Condition, product and return-channel restrictions apply.

Can I return an item to The Home Depot without a receipt?

Online purchases may be found with a credit card, order number or email. Mobile-wallet store purchases may require the device used to pay. Non-receipted returns require government-issued photo ID and verification approval; an accepted refund may be store credit at the lowest advertised price. Neither lookup nor credit is guaranteed.

Can I return opened items to The Home Depot?

The policy does not describe every 90-day item as unopened-only, but listed 30-day and 7-day groups require unused, factory-sealed condition. Include all components. Major appliances retain the separate 48-hour rules even when unopened or unused; damage/defect and product exceptions must be checked.

When does The Home Depot return window start?

The eligible credit-account 365-day rule explicitly starts on purchase. Appliance reporting uses delivery or service-desk pickup time; specific delivered-plant and order-resolution rules use delivery. For general 90-, 30- and 7-day periods, confirm the applicable start from your receipt/order rather than assuming every online and in-store purchase uses the same date.

Can I use two days in the calculator for Home Depot appliances?

No. The policy uses an exact 48-hour appliance rule, with a weekend exclusion stated for damage/defect reporting. A date-only two-calendar-day estimate could be misleading; contact Customer Solutions and confirm the actual deadline and next steps.
